Here’s a little background on Christie:
Christie is a 51 year old single mom of two teenage boys still living at home, and an older son with a 1 year old granddaughter. She was diagnosed last July with a genetic, fatal heart-lung disease, PAH. Without a double lung transplant, she was told that it’s terminal. Her health quickly deteriorated in May and she’s been hospitalized at UCSD ever since. Christie has been kept alive at UCSD, but recently received a viable pair of lungs and is expected to successfully recover from this major surgery.
She struggles financially as a single mom, but the stress of being hospitalized and being so far from home has put extra financial stress on the family. There are so many expenses involved with having a transplant including rehabilitation, recovery and maintaining her healthcare afterwards. She is expected to need approximately $70,000 over the next 1-2 years to sustain her post-surgically.
